Description:
Quimby S. Backus was born 1838-07-23 in Bridgewater, VT. He worked for Howe Scale Co. in Woodstock and Brandon, VT. By 1861 he was working as a gunsmith, and then in a railroad shop. He moved to Winchendon, MA, and in 1868 patented a vise and a chuck-drill (a drill bit for lathe work) and began manufacturing them under the name Q. S. Backus before founding the Backus Vise Co. the following year. In January 1873, Backus merged his Backus Vise Co. with the Millers Falls Manufacturing Co. to create the Millers Falls Co. Backus had been working out of the Millers Falls Manufacturing Co.'s plant since 1870. Backus then moved to Holyoke, MA, and founded Quimby Backus Co. to make his braces.
