Jeff Joslin Article in July 1883 Carpentry & Building
|
Description: |
Original patent for the Forstner Bit with "the circular cutting band and cutting lip located in nearly the same horizontal plane."Known examples are marked with BF (B. Forstner) and the patent date. Collector Eric Brown reports that there are two types of these early Forstner bits: compared to the Type 2 bits, the Type 1 bits have larger openings and narrower cutting rims. Eric reports a boxed set of Type 2 bits made by Forstner, Sharp & Co. The July 1883 issue of Carpentry & Building has an article on the Forstner auger bits from that maker (see link). We could not find any data points on Forstner, Sharp & Co. outside of 1883. By 1885 the newer version of the bits (see patent 280,026) were being made by the Bridgeport Gun Implement Co. of Bridgeport, Conn. |
