Description:

This patent is the earliest we have found that uses the mechanism of a "knuckle joint press" where the pressing velocity greatly slows down toward the bottom of the stroke while also exerting greater force. This type of press is used in application such as coin-making, embossing and forging. This invention was apparently intended for flattening metal balls ("puddler's balls") in the process of converting high-carbon pig iron to lower-carbon wrought iron bars.

The inventor Eben A. Lester (1787-1864) was an engineer and surveyor who is now remembered mainly for his survey of water supplies in Boston as part of an effort to improve the city's water system.
