Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for William Sellers & Co.

Description: |
This friction-gearing mechanism uses a series of friction discs where every other disc actually consists of a pair of discs that are stacked with a slight space between) to allow the adjacent disc(s) to pass partially in between, and the surfaces of the discs are angled to allow a point contact between adjacent discs. Variable speed is obtained by varying the spacing of the stacked discs, which varies the radial location of the contact point and hence varies the gearing ratio. This relatively complex arrangement is claimed to avoid side-strain on the shaft journals. The specification claims that this mechanism is suitable for "all forms of machines" and does not give even one specific example. It is not known if the assignee company ever used this invention. |
