Description:
Brunel had earlier invented boot-making machinery and had a factory making boots for the army; this patent is presumably related to that effort. The patent specification describes the process as "studding the leather with small nails or pains, after it had been previously saturated with a composition of neat's-foot oil mixed with tar in the proportion of nine or ten to one." The patent also describes mechanisms, integrated into his boot-making machinery, that make the nails and drive them into place.
