Sinclair and others v. Backus
Description:
The cone-shaped body holds jaws that close as the exterior cone-shaped threaded sleeve is screwed out. A cross-member with a central hole acts to retain the jaws in the body, and stabilize tools like drill bits when the jaws function as a chuck.

Variants were produced with and without the auxiliary ratchet shown in the drawings. In Sinclair and others v. Backus, the ratchet feature was challenged as infringement on the Moore ratchet patent (no. 45,334) used by the Lowell Wrench Company.
