Three-jaw chuck whose jaws are held open by springs. The shell's tapered interior prevents the jaws from closing completely, thereby avoiding their falling inside the bore of the spindle. The 1866-07-07 Scientific American had a Classified Ad from L. H. Olmsted of Stamford, Conn., for "Drill Chucks. Olmsted's Patent.
