Description: |
The primary innovation in Packer's ratchet is the enclosed feed screw and screw barrel which "are effectually protected from all dust or other injurious matter."
The inventor applied for an extension of the original patent. However, the inventor had earlier applied for, and been granted, a reissue. The Commissioner of Patents ruled that the original patent could not, therefore, be extended.
This patent is the "PACKER RATCHET" which was used as a ratchet driver for metal drills.
Eagle Ratchet Co. appears as manufacturer in multiple directories from the early 1860s. The earliest of those ads note ratchet wrenches and other specialized applications in addition to multiple sizes of the ratchet drill. |
