Description: |
The combination can include hammer, hatchet, pincher, staple puller, wire cutter, leather punch, nail claw and screwdriver.
The tool received Canadian patent no. CA-63,676 on Aug. 25, 1899.
The example shown marked PATENTED JULY 19, 1898 resembles a combination tool advertised in 1903 as the RANCHMAN produced by Straight Mfg. Co. of Jamestown, NY. The screwdriver is chipped; the handle with the leather punch broke, and has had a piece of steel rod welded to replace the handle. The anvil for the leather punch is still in place in the opposite handle.
Morris patented a later version of this tool with detachable jaw sections (pat. no 784,959 granted March 14, 1905).
Actual production of the National Hatchet Co. (Marshalltown, IA) combination tool dates to ca. 1906 - 1910. |
