Description: |
The object of the patent is rapid adjustment. The ball bearings at one end of the adjusting worm, and the spring and conical end of the the adjusting worm, allow the movable jaw to be slid "closed" without manipulating the adjusting worm. These same features bind the movable jaw against back movement.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" shows an 1896 IRON AGE announcement for the wrench. A known example from the BALL BEARING WRENCH CO. matches that 1896 piece with markings for three patent dates: Sept. 4, '94 (525,435); Nov. 5, '95 (549,221); Dec. 1, '96 (this patent). Aspects of the wrench anticipate Wenger's subsequent patents (nos. 743,360 and 837,254).
Also the subject of John Gardiner's improvement patent (no. 618,859) and W.M. Norcross' improvement patent (no. 618,899).
Wenger applied the same general concepts to a "center screw adjust pocket wrench" in parallel patent no. 572,186. Both styles are shown in German patent DE-98590, Canadian patent CA-54,773 and British patent GB-189627293. |
