Description:
A toothed piece inside the movable jaw is jammed against matching fine rack teeth on the main bar to hold the adjustment. A toggle inside the jaw generates the jamming action, and is a focus of the patent.

The specifications demonstrate the parallel evolution of British and American vocabulary -- by treating "spanner" and "wrench" as synonyms.

Corresponding British patent GB-187800445 was registered February 2, 1878.
