Description:

Patent claim has to do with the configuration of the cutting lips of auger bits. Rather than forming a straight line, or simple convex arc, from the lead screw to the spur, the cutting lips in Griswold's bits are formed by two straight lines which meet at an angle closer to the spur. This, presumably, lessens resistance in cutting the chips free, because both portions of the cutting lip will be making a shear cut. See Parsons' patent, 166221, a decade later, for a similar idea.
