Description:
Joiner's plane with a grooved bearing surface for the blade in order to reduce the friction so as to make adjusting the blade easier.

Tidgewell served as a foreman at Meriden as well as apparently at one time operating Tidgewell & Co., Middletown, CT.

Known example is a block plane with the blade marked with the mfg's name, an invalid patent date FEB 10 1885 and this patent date. The back of the blade support has two grooves consistent with the intent of the design but there is no built up support area in the back of the mouth opening as the original patent drawing indicates.
