Description:
"Abstract: 23,613 A.D. 1898.... Disc and wheel apparatus.-A flexible tyre C, preferably of rubber, is held between discs A, A', one of which is free to slide along the shaft B. When the wheel is revolved, the tyre C is bellied out by centrifugal action, and the discs A, A' are drawn closer together. The movable disc may be adjusted and fixed by the screw B' so as to give any desirable convexity to the tyre. The shaft B may be screwed with left and right handed threads, and the bosses a, a<1> may be screwed in a similar manner, so as to cause the discs to separate or approach according to the direction of rotation, or to give an easy means of adjustment. Bearings are used as described in Specification No. 16,288, A.D. 1898. The tyre C may itself be used as a polishing-surface, or a polishing-band J, preferably of leather, may be fitted over and secured by projections passing through holes in the tyre. In a modification shown in Fig. 12, the polishing-band or tyre C is made bodily movable in a radial direction under the stretching effect of the centrifugal force. The outward movement is limited by rings c, c<1> on the discs A, A<1>, and by an inner band d<3> attached to the outer band d<2> by an intermediate piece d<5>. The whole band may be removed and replaced by separating the discs A, A'. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the tyre C is attached to the discs by rings D, D<1> and screws f."
