The term "Butcher steel" likely comes from the W. & S. Butcher Steel Works of Sheffield, England, who were known for their spring steel made from Swedish bar iron.

The 1922 New England Business Directory and Gazetteer, page 2420, has a 1/4 page ad from "G. McKenney & Son / Manufacturers of / The 'McKenney' Drop-Tooth and Raker-Tooth Buck Saws / We Use Swedish Steel Exclusively / 23 Frank Street Bangor, Me."
