Description:
Correspondent Chris Berger reported an example of this bit: "There is a mark 'D. ADAMS' in a small arched logo (no location) on one of the flats of the shank. I did not find 'D. ADAMS' in DAT or any other source." An 1854 Boston City Directory has a listing for a David Adams, no occupation given, as well as a couple of other D. Adams with unrelated occupations. The same directory lists Asa Weeks: "submaster Mather School, house G corner Fourth". The 1855 directory lists "Adams Daniel R. watchmaker, 220 Hanover, house". Daniel M. Adams was a varnisher, Dean J. Adams was a restorator, and David Adams had no occupation listed. Asa Weeks has the same listing as in 1854 except "boards 325 Broadway". The 1856 directory has Weeks submaster at Lawrence School, same home address as before.
