| This design patent is for the Kelly "PERFECT" axe. As of 2026 this design is being manufactured by Warwood Tool Co., Wheeling, WV.In late 1885 the axe factory of W. C. Kelly & Co., in Portland, KY, burned to the ground. The rebuilt in Louisville in a location with better rail access, and reorganized the business as the Kelly Axe Manufacturing Co. The axes produced in their new factory had a mild steel body and a higher-carbon hardened steel cutting edge. "W. C. Kelly / Perfect Axe / Patented Sept. 29th 1885 / Kelly Axe Mf'g. Co. / Louisville, Ky." was stamped on the side. Later axes were marked "W. C. Kelly / Perfect Axe / Patented May 7th and April 23rd, 1889 / Made by / Kelly M'f'g Co. / Louisville / Kentucky, / U.S.A.". |
