Description: |
The whole top of the plane is iron, as contrasted to the typical transitional plane. There is a combination levercap/chipbreaker, although it is capable of using single or double irons.
Regarding the plane in the attached image, An EARLY PATENT TRANSITIONAL JOINTER PLANE by Smith & Carpenter, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This example of the August 25, 1868 U.S. Patent issued to F. Smith and I. Carpenter, both of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is in excellent collector quality condition. The top has a most interesting and unusual open casting. The other examples of this plane have had a cast iron lever cap of a form that differs from this plane and the cap may be a later replacement. (per Martin J. Donnelly) |
