Description: |
The invention is a modular shipping container, and this patent marks the advent of container shipping which has revolutionized not just shipping but manufacturing worldwide, and incidentally made the inventor very wealthy. McLean's idea was to use containers to facilitate the movement of bulk cargo. Existing bulk-cargo shipping relied on ships that were specialized for one type of bulk cargo, which led to ships being only useful in one-half of a round trip. Thus, the gain in efficiency of more flexible cargo hauling easily offsets the additional expense and inefficiencies of using container ships rather than bulk cargo ships. |
