Kirk Eppler "Vintage Machinery" entry for Pearl Square Hole Auger Manufacturing Co.
|
Description: |
The second in a series of patents where the inventor created and refined his square-hole auger. An example is labeled "MADE BY THE PEARL SQUARE AUGER MFG CO. NEW YORK. USA. PAT OCT 3 '93, AUG 11 '96, JUNE 18 '98." These dates correspond, respectively, to patents 505,844, 606,575, and 788,941, which implies that the present patent design was short-lived. The present patent's improvements are aimed at lubricating the boring-head to prevent overheating, and consists of channels where oil can be conveyed down the shaft to the boring-head. A clutch is used to disengage the cutters when reversing out of the hole. Judging by the subsequent patent, the clutch mechanism was too complex and was designed out altogether. |
