Description: |
Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in the Dec. 1836 fire. Only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered. Little is known about this patent. There are no patent drawings available. This patent is in the database for reference only.
A Mr. Clopper of Maryland was granted the rights to produce and sell the loom in Virginia. Thomas Jefferson called the loom "the most beautiful invention," and though he never bought one, he praised it for years after seeing it. The innovations introduced by Janes allowed the loom to be operated by only one hand as the beater would activate the treadles and the shuttles. |
