Description:

This reissue is for an improvement to the Morse telegraph. The defining feature of the Morse telegraph from its predecessors is that it made permanent marks on paper, rather than just twitches of a dial or some other evanescent effect. Another patent, "Magnetic printing telegraph", was granted to one R. E. House only a week later. It was likewise reissued (on 1859-09-20) and extended. Yet another printing telegraph patent was issued on 1856-04-29, to one H. N. Baker (reissued (1870-01-25), and extended).

According to the 1873 "Subject-matter index of patents for inventions issued by the United States Patent Office", this patent was granted an extension.
