Description:
The focus of this patent is on the steeper pitch and deeper threads (apparently made possible by its overall taper) of the double threaded lead screw. In addition to the location of the threads being aligned with the cutting lips, they also extend down into the body of the bit for a short distance.

Researcher Geoff Emmes reports a couple of bits in Australia branded "Cox's Patent" and made by Wm. Marples & Sons of Sheffield, England. There is no mention of these bits in any Marples catalogue issued in Britain so it seems this auger was produced only for the Australian market. Geoff reports a couple other examples of this patent in Australia, one branded Ridgeway and the other branded Mathieson; neither mention Cox but have the patent lead screw.
