Description:
Single twist auger bit with single spur opposite an inclined cutting lip. Claim is economy of construction and reduction of resistance in the cut, as well as additional clearance for chips to rise up through the body of the bit.

Quite a few examples of this patent auger have been seen, marked with the patent date and "CONN. VALLEY MFG CO."

The inventor had previously been partner in auger-bit maker Lewis & Haydon, which was active 1849 to 1866. It was apparently succeeded by Lewis & Co.

From the 1884 book, "History of Middlesex County, Connecticut": "The Centerbrook Manufacturing Company was organized in 1867. They carried on the manufacture of auger bits on the premises now occupied by their successors, the Connecticut Valley Manufacturing Company. The latter company was incorporated under the general law of the State, February 19th 1874, with a capital of $30,000. The company bought at sheriff's sale the property of the former one, and have since continued the business. The officers of the company are: George A. Cheney, president; A. M. Wright, treasurer and superintendent, both of whom have held their positions from the first; and C. G. Cheney, secretary. The main building is 100 by 25 feet, two stories high; and the forge room is a one story building, 125 by 25 feet. About 70-horse power is obtained from the stream, and the shop employs an average number of 50 hands, the most of whom are skilled workmen. The goods are sent to all parts of this and foreign countries."

From the preceding it is plausible, even likely, that Centerbrook Manufacturing Co. also made this auger but this remains unconfirmed.
