Description: |
Cross-section of the "blade" of the single twist and the ellipsoid profile between twists designed to maximize space and speed of clearing chips. For a very similar bit patented the previous year, see Hoefle's patent (430,344).
Another key element of this patent regards a small gap, or annular groove, at the base of the lead screw. The purpose is to allow the threading of the lead screw to be formed without risk of damaging the floor, or cutting, lip(s).
We have seen a complete boxed set of these augers. The box is labeled "The Ford Patent Auger Bit Co. / Holyoke, Mass." and the augers themselves are stamped "Ford Bit Co. Holyoke, Mass. / Pat. Oct. 27 91". James E. Price reported an example stamped only with the patent date.
A search for information on the Ford Patent Auger Bit Co. did not reveal many data points. We found catalog listings as late as 1918, though the company name did not appear in the text but was visible in the accompanying illustrations. We also searched on "Ford Bit Co." and "Ford Auger Bit Co." and got hits on both these names. More research is needed to determine which name(s) were actually registered business names and which were "doing business as" names. |
