Description: |
A spring loaded pawl at the base of the movable jaw frame engages rack teeth on the shank to hold the adjustment; the pipe gripping jaw has a second spring to help provide the rocking motion necessary to grip and release pipe.
Canadian patent CA-41,781 issued January 30, 1893 is for the same basic design, with slightly different details for the handle and relative size of the rack teeth. U.S patent 517,074 issued March 27, 1894 is for a subsequent evolution.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" assumes Stanley produced these tools. |
