| A typical machinist's scratch gage, complete with micro-adjust. Where this gage makes its mark, however, is in the extra features.
The first unusual feature on this gage is the reversible head, which can provide either a flat fence or single-point fence. This in and of itself is a very nice idea, but the real innovation comes from mounting the head offset on the bar. This simple idea gives two different widths of reference surfaces, allowing it to work off very shallow rabbets, or around chamfers.
I do not know if this piece was ever produced commercially, but the offset head idea was used by Stanley as soon as the patent expired. The Stanley #97 and #98 pizza-wheel marking gages and the #90 metal marking gage all used this offset head.
