Description:

The innovation is a surveyor's tape with a scale that can be adjusted to compensate for temperature variations.

"Paine's Patent Standard Steel Tapes" are featured in an 1883 catalog from James W. Queen & Co. of Philadelphia, page 139. The tapes were available in lengths of 33, 50, 60, 75 and 100 feet, and marked in 10ths or 12ths of a foot. The tapes had leather case and flush handles. Available accessories included a pocket thermometer plus a spring balance and level. Prices for the tapes ranged between $5.50 and $15.00. The patent date is visible in the drawing of the tape reel, but no maker's name is visible or mentioned. The tape as illustrated includes the temperature compensation mechanism.
