Description: |
The face of the wrench bar is threaded to engage threads on a nut in the adjustable jaw. The adjusting nut rides on an oval pin with a second adjusting knob, to throw the adjusting nut into or out of engagement with the teeth on the bar. This enables the wrench to operate with a quick and screw-adjust.
A GRAY BROTHERS (N.Y.) 1857 / 1858 listing shows a HYDE's PATENT GRIPPING WRENCH that incorporates features of this patent and Hyde's March 13, 1855 patent (no. 12,510).
A corroded example retrieved from a Civil War era "shipwreck" (C.S.S. Georgia) shows the "grain" of the upset wrought iron forming the head -- "The wrench has features from two Hyde patents: No.12,510 (issued March 13, 1855) for the pipe jaw attachment and No. 13,617 (issued Oct. 02, 1855) for the worm screw and rack teeth adjustment with the eccentric worm screw pin allowing for quick adjustment." |
