Joel Havens "Vintage Machinery" entry for Witherbee Igniter Co.; Wico Electric Co.
|
Description: |
A reciprocatory armature type igniter needs a strong initial force to pull the reciprocatory armature away from contact with the magnet's poles, and this was conventionally done with a sudden high-speed movement using a hammer, which created objectionable noise. This improvement uses the igniter's own electromagnetism to force the armature away; as soon as the armature is not touching the poles the force drops. Choke coils are used to extend the time during which the armature accelerates so that it can attain the required speed. |
