Description:
See also US patent 606,549. This is one of the earliest patent for a handheld electric drill. The year before this patent was issued, C. & E. Fein reportedly made a stationary drilling machine with integrated motor and then in 1897 designed and built a handheld version, but this patent is earlier than the Fein which is often listed as the earliest handheld electric drill. The Holmes/Siemens handheld electric drill and the Fein handheld electric drill are very similar in appearance.

Another candidate for the earliest electric drill patent is the 1889 Australian patent granted to Brain, Arnot and Baker; see patent AU-1,890,000,001. That patent is for a rock drill that stretches the definition of "handheld".
