Description: |
The inventor had earlier been granted a planer-related patent that was assigned to Alfred T. Serrell; see patent 39,996.The The 1848 Doggett's New York City Directory lists "Lawrence John, moulder, 115 Norfolk"; this is the earliest mention of this John Lawrence we have found, though there were several men of the same name in NYC at that time so it is difficult to be certain. The 1850 directory lists "Lawrence John, manufacturer of wood mouldings, 87 Elizabeth, h. 157 Madison". The 1855 directory lists "Lawrence John, would mouldings & turning, 445, 447 & 449 First av. cor. E. 27th, depot, 291 Grand co. of Eldridge, h. E. Morrisiania". The 1860 directory lists "Lawrence John & Co. planing, 228 Third av. & Second av. n E. 53d". The 1870 directory lists "Lawrence John, planing, 512 First av. h Mott Haven". The 1876 directory lists "Lawrence John, mill, 514 First av. & 417 E. 28th, h 140th n Alexander av." The 1880 directory lists "Lawrence John J. planing, 554 First av. h 140th n Alexander av."; this is most likely the original John Lawrence's son. |
