| This patent was extended; see the link "Patent extension decision" for details. The patent describes the use of a stationary diagonal cutter placed after the cylindrical cutterhead; the stationary cutter planes away the ripples left by the cylindrical cutter; however, this is not claimed because it was an old idea and the patent examiner erroneously allowed this text to remain. The inventor was ordered to remove this text before the patent was extended as described in the patent extension decision. The important part of the patent proved to be the mechanism to adjust the pair of matcher-heads using a pair of screws. The Woodworth planer had one fixed matcher head with the other adjusted by a screw. Woodbury's improvement was, arguably, not patentable. But for reasons lost to history, the US Patent Office was lenient in granting planer-related patents around the time that the Woodworth patent monopoly was ending. |
