| This invention is notable as a particularly early attempt to automate a portion of building construction. So far as we can tell, the invention itself was not a success."The nature of my invention consists in plastering the outer and side and also the top walls {ceilings} of buildings by means of a machine..." The machine has a mortar-box and a trowel mounted at the top and sitting on a wheeled frame that can be moved into place. The working parts ride in a vertically sliding frame that allow them to be moved down a wall, applying and smoothing plaster as it goes. For plastering ceilings the mortar-box is closed by a slide, the box is moved to the top of the machine and the operating cord wound upon a drum. The machine is then wheeled from one side of the room to the center; a piston and lever feed plaster to the trowel. Then the machine is moved to the opposite side of the room and again moved to the center, thus completing a side-to-side swath of plaster. Three passes across each surface is required for a completed surface, the machine being adjusted for each pass. We have not mentioned a number of adjustments that are required at each step. Despite the seeming simplicity of the machine, its operation is complex and subtle, and so the machine replaces a person skilled in plastering with a person skilled in operating the machine, which would seem to be at least as difficult a skill. It is uncertain whether the machine was faster than applying plaster by hand. |
