| This car coupler was a predecessor to Mr. Janney's revolutionary knuckle coupler (patent #138,405, which in a modified form is still in use today.
Abstract:
My invention consists in constructing an automatically working car-coupling in such a manner that the coupling and uncoupling are performed without endangering the operator's life by going between the cars. The link intended to couple two cars together is placed and kept in an inclined position, resting its lower end against the oscillating-catch, leaning its upper end on a support attached for that purpose to the platform of the car. When the coupling is to take place, the shock of the two cars, when running against each other, will force the link forward, and it will fall over the oscillating catch of the other car, and both cars are coupled together.
