Description: |
| This is the original US patent for dynamite, a mixture of nitroglycerin and silica, the silica helping to stabilize the nitroglycerin that could otherwise be ignited by temperature changes or minor jolts. Earlier, Nobel had invented the blasting cap which provided the larger "jolt" needed to ignite dynamite. This patent was immediately licensed by the Giant Powder Co., which was set up in 1867 by Julius Bandmann of San Francisco expressly to manufacture Nobel's new invention. The company would earn a reputation for poor safety practices, with explosions and fatalities spanning from 1869 to 1907; In 1915 the company was acquired by the Hercules Powder Co., which operated the former Giant Powder plants for decades without any serious accidents. |
