Description:
See patent 220,271 for information on the genesis of this patent.

This patent is intended to make the mechanism Winchester's lever-action rifle more robust so that it could handle larger cartridges. Browning flanked the bolt with vertical blocks, and converted to a bottom-loading magazine that did not require the action to be cycled while loading. The resulting rifle was sold as the Winchester Model 1886, used for big-game hunting such as buffalo. Slightly later, a lighter-weight version was introduced, the Model 1892, which sold in vast numbers, and more versions followed.
