The invention is a surveying instrument that used the position of the sun to determine latitude and longitude. This patent spawned Additional Improvement patents, which was a rarely used patent type that was less onerous to obtain than regular utility patents: see patents AI247 and AI289. The example shown seems to most closely resemble patent AI247
