Description: |
Modified version of a form earlier produced as "WOODS PLYER WRENCH" [Koren Mfg., Cleveland OH]. The modification being a spring acting to close the jaws when the clamping "size adjustment" is released. A 1917 ad image for WOODS PLYER WRENCH is included as the 2nd image.
From the specifications..
"The objects of the invention are to provide a simple and practical form of wrench, adapted to^general use mechanics, and particularly effective for ùse with one hand, and hence readily operable by maimed mechanics and engine drivers (text at this point lined out), who would otherwise be incapacitated for further useful work. ....
It .. includes a spring pressed depressible member upon the shank of the stationary jaw, which engages movable jaw and forces it into engagement with the fixed-jaw when the pivoted wedge are released."
Woods' March 25, 1919 drawings are labeled as originating in Cleveland, OH; the specifications give his address as Greenfield, Mass.
Woods' early patents match products listed by the Woods Specialty Co., Granville, NY ca. 1898 - 1902. In later years, he appears in corporations associated with his patents in several places including Toronto, Cleveland, etc. |
