Description:
Patented in Canada, #CA-60,739.

Abstract:

Relates to variable cut-off and reversing gear for portable and other engines. The valve is actuated by an adjustable crankpin D, Fig. 2, carried by a disc F which is geared in the manner shown to the crank shaft K. The crank-pin is mounted on a slide E which can be moved across the disc by means of a pinion M in gear with a rack cut in the slide. The shaft L carrying the pinion is enclosed for a portion of its length in a sleeve H formed in one with the disc F and rotating in a bearing. The other end of the shaft L has adjustably secured to it a sleeve N also rotating in a bearing. The adjacent ends of these sleeves are enclosed by a sleeve 0, Fig. 3, in which is cut a pair of oppositely-inclined helical grooves d, d containing movable blocks e, e pivoted to the sleeves. The sleeve 0 has on it a collar or flange b engaged by one end of a bell crank Q, the other end of which is connected to a hand reversing-lever by which the expansion can be varied or the engine reversed while in motion.

In mechanism for the purpose described, a slide having a wrist pin on which is thereon on which is journaled the valve connecting rod in combination with a disk having guides thereon in which the said slide may move: a suitably journaled sleeve on which the said disk id fast; means for revolving the said sleeve from some moving part; a shaft within the sleeve; a connection between the shaft and the slide whereby the latter may be moved by the turning of the shaft.
