Description:
The patentee was a working blacksmith. The beveled, serrated face was intended to facilitate blacksmiths' forming calks on horseshoes.

MALLERY's PATENT hammers appear in period hardware catalogs, and later in Fayette R. Plumb's line of specialty hammers.

One researcher suggests Mallery's son was partner in a firm capable of manufacturing the hammers.
