Description:
This patent was applied for but never finalized, for unknown reasons, and no specification or drawing are available. Nevertheless, the patent date has been seen on a Fenton & Marsden mortise gauge along with the number 970 (this was the 970th patent issued in 1847 and that was how British patents were numbered at the time). See also patent GB-184,600,702.

The firm of Fenton & Marsden was established 1839 and they operated the Ecceshall Works, making edge tools, skates, braces, bits, screw boxes, etc. Fenton is reported to have left the partnership in 1846 when he was bought out by George Marsden and his brother Robert Marsden, along with Samuel Silverwood; the firm became Marsden Brothers & Silverwood. Sometime between 1852 and '54 Silverwood left and the firm became Marsden Brothers. In 1896 John Wilson acquired the firm and renamed it John Wilson, Marsden Brothers. The works were moved to Portland Works in 1898, and then in 1901 the business was absorbed by Robert Sorby & Sons. Source: Ken Roberts, Some 19th Century English Woodworking Tools, 1980.
