Description: |
An ad in the August 1900 Machinery, page 40, shows "J. R. Duff's Hand Driller" which is a standard bit brace with the addition of this patent chain-and-threaded-collar feed mechanism. The manufacturer is Duff Machine Co., Lowell, Mass. A surviving example (see photos), presumably a different model than the one pictured in the ad, quite closely matches the patent drawing. There was a Duff Machine Co., Haverhill, Mass., that made milling machines in the 1950s, but that seems to be a company unrelated to the Lowell company of the same name that was active in the early part of the 20th century. |
