Description: |
The patent describes a two-stroke single-cylinder engine with spark plug. Although the idea of the internal combustion engine was already nearly a century old, this is considered the first such engine to make it into production. Lenoir manufactured 400 of them in 1860 alone.According to the Wikipedia biography of the inventor, this patent was amended on 1860-02-28, 1860-04-05, 1860-04-17, 1861-01-05, 1867-06-22, and 1867-09-13. These amendments apparently included a four-stroke variant, and customizations for marine and automotive use—Lenoir built his first automobile in 1860. His 1862 automobile was capable of 3 km/h, and the advent of the first practical automobile had to wait another 23 years for Carl Benz's landmark vehicle, patent DE-37,435. |
