| This is the patent for the ubiquitous star-wheel dresser, used to dress an uneven and/or glazed surface from a grinding wheel. It remains substantially unchanged nearly 150 years later. Well into the 20th century it was commonly known as a Huntington wheel dresser, sometimes misspelled as "Huntingdon" wheel dresser.1878 ads from C. E. Roberts & Co. featured the Huntington Emery Wheel Dresser. An ad in the 1883 Farley's Directory of the Metal Workers of the United States features "The Huntington Emery Wheel Dresser, (Improved.) Manufactured by the Chicago Screw Co." The selling agents were the Novelty Belt Hook Co. of Hartford. We have seen some 19th century sources that identify Novelty Belt Hook Co. as the manufacturer but this would seem to be incorrect. |
