Description: |
This emery wheel has a cast metal hub that has a dovetailed circumferential recess to hold the bonded emery material. During manufacturing, the emery material is pressed into the dovetailed recess while the material is in a plastic state, as described in patent 467,254. If the emery material cracks or breaks then the dovetail holds it in place. An ad on the front page of the 1893-01-05 The Iron Trade Review features this "Acme Safety Emery Wheel", available in diameters from 10 to 36 inches. "We have run a split wheel 2,800 revolutions per minute, the metallic centre retaining the material in place." |
