| The inventor claimed that these hand-powered shears, weighing less than 500 pounds, could squarely cut a railroad rail. These shears were intended to be manufactured by the Stevens Tool Co., and they were setting up manufacture when Mr. Stevens became financially embarrassed and the shop, which belonged to Stevens, was repossessed by the bank (see link for a lawsuit involving this repossession, which reveals information about both the Stevens company and Stevens himself). Whether it was because of this or other reasons, the company failed. |
