Description:
An 1851 issue of Scientific American mentioned that A. D. Philips of Springfield, MA, had, on 1836-10-24, been granted a friction-match patent, which was extended seven years. Philips did not try to enforce the patent, but eventually sold it to E. Bryan and others, who sued several match manufacturers, including H. E. Pierce of Charlemont.
