Description: |
| Hermann Schmidt's magnetic chuck uses two horizontal plates separated by a layer of non-magnetizable material. Each plate consists of two sections of magnetizable material separated by a strip of non-magnetizable material. There is a large circular opening in that material to hold a disc containing a series of permanent magnets, and the magnets within each half of the disc all have the same polarity as each other, but opposite to those in the other half of the disc. The disc can be rotated 90 degrees. In one position all of the magnets of like polarity are between a single section of the upper plate and a single section of the lower plate, and in such position the magnetic chuck is active and holds the workpiece in position. In the other position half of the magnets of like polarity are between each section of the upper plate and each section of the lower plate, and in such position the magnetic chuck is inactive and the workpiece is released. |
