Description:
This machine is intended for "engraving or chasing various articles of jewelry and silverware, such as rings and circular or curved articles..."

The inventor also patented a tobacco-stemming machine, which although flawed, contained some key ideas. He died in 1884 before he had perfected his invention. A subsequent lawsuit, Coffee et al v. Guerrant, is interesting reading. "Guerrant was poor and had great difficulty in procuring the money with which to construct his first machine... The process of applying for the patents seems not to have been well managed, and there were defects in the drawings, which had to be corrected. Before the matter could be properly attended to Guerrant died. His widow was left poor, with a large family of children, sickness among whom caused her to remove for a time to North Carolina..."
